Transphobia Is A Useless Distraction From Your Real Problems, Don’t Fall For It!

I remember, starting around 2020, it could have been before that but this is just when I became aware of it, trans people really started to become a target. It started as something I would witness from afar in Britain and the United States, but as the years went by, I would gradually meet Irish people who’s whole personality was defined by the fact that they hated trans people. Well, today I’ve got something to say to all transphobes, everywhere.

The powers that be are laughing at you. They are pointing and laughing at you. They are laughing at you so hard that if they were consuming any liquid it has now escaped their mouth and has hit their laptop, and they have to buy a new laptop.

If you are a transphobe, you are being taken for an absolute fool by people with a lot more power than you.

Because you see, we’ve been down this road before. I was born in 1985, so I remember it well. So, let me just jump into my time machine, back to the year 2000. Social media doesn’t exist yet. NSYNC are like, a thing. We are all disappointed that the year 2000 hasn’t brought us super advanced cars and cities on Mars. (We didn’t know yet that the person who would promise us these things was a fascist and winner of the “Worst Father Of The Year” competition.) But, now that we’re in the year 2000, let’s look at what minority group got people all upset. It wasn’t trans people.

It was gay people. As I walk through the dystopia that was the year 2000, I encounter the same rhetoric against trans people today, but it’s against gay people. So instead of, “If we let a “man” identify as a woman, we might as well let “him” identify as a dog.” It’s, “If we let a man marry a man we might as well let him marry a dog.” Instead of, “A “man” identifying as a woman violates biological reality” we had “A woman marrying a woman violates our traditions.” Instead, of “We can’t have trans people, because they’re bad for children for some reason” we had, “We can’t have gay people, because they’re bad for children for some reason.”

And with regard to the last point, it was vicious. Really, it was horrifying. Completely unsubstantiated claims that gay people were child sex abusers were this very widespread thing. And now, completely unsubstantiated claims that trans people are child sex abusers is this very widespread thing.

It’s almost like, it doesn’t matter which enemy it is, as long as there IS an enemy.

With regard to Ireland, I feel things changed in 2015, when gay marriage was voted in, in an absolute landslide victory. Personally, I thought it was absurd that it was ever a referendum, I don’t think majority rule should decide whether two men should be able to get married any more than it should decide whether a white woman and a black man should be able to get married. But, with hindsight, I’m still glad there was a referendum, because it sent a powerful message, the vast, vast majority of Irish people have no problem with two people of the same gender getting married. Later in the year, adoption for gay people was fully legalized. Technically it was legal for a gay individual to adopt before that, but not for both them and their partner to have custody of the child. So now, gay adoption was fully legalized.

And then, because the laws of God were violated, the sky turned a crimson red, skeletons started rising from the ground and shouting, “The pox is upon us, the pox is upon us!”, and Graham Norton grew to one hundred feet tall and started terrorizing the city. It was awful, giving gay people full civil rights caused so much death and destruction! There was so much pain and misery!

Hang on, because it was a good few years ago, I might be remembering it wrong. Hang on, let me try and remember it properly. Oh yes, now I remember.

Giving gay people their full civil liberties didn’t cause any problems whatsoever. The world kept turning, and, after all the years of propaganda about how gay rights was going to destroy society, NOTHING happened. Well not nothing, gay people were able to live their lives with a lot more dignity, but, straight people were not affected by this outcome at all.

And in the United States, that same year the supreme court declared gay marriage was legal in all 50 states, it previously being down to the decision of individual states whether it was legal or not:

https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/06/26/417717613/supreme-court-rules-all-states-must-allow-same-sex-marriages

Now, I’ll admit I haven’t properly done the research on this, so I’ll just do a quick DuckDuckGo search to see if this caused RuPaul to grow to two hundred feet tall and start attacking downtown New York with his laser eyes, and, let me just check, sorry, I’ll be with you in a second.

No, that didn’t happen. With the full legalization of gay marriage, the United States was no better, and no worse than it was the previous day, except two men or two women could now express their love for each other, then realize they actually hate each other after a few years, and have a really bitter divorce, just like straight people!

To anyone who’s reading this, who’s maybe in their mid twenties or older, do you remember all of this? Do you remember, there was the same rhetoric about how if gay people get their rights, it’ll be a disaster, and then, they got their rights, and, NOTHING bad happened. Do you remember?

So, isn’t it utterly plausible, that if, and hopefully when, trans people get the same level of acceptance that gay people have now, that on that day, absolutely NOTHING bad will happen, other than trans people getting to live their lives without worrying about transphobes making them feel unsafe in our society while they are just, like the rest of us, trying to live their lives?

This is why transphobia is for suckers. It’s a made up controversy, just like homophobia was all those years ago. Trans people living their lives while completely accepted by society, doesn’t negatively impact you at all, just like gay people being accepted didn’t negatively affect you. (This isn’t to say homophobia has been completely eliminated, but after decades of activism from gay people, it is hopefully, hopefully, at a lower level than it’s been in previous decades.)

So then, why are transphobes being taken for a fool? Well, in Ireland, there’s a housing crisis, have a look at this, and then ask yourself, “What the fuck is going on?”

https://www.thejournal.ie/housing-crisis-in-ireland-trump-oval-office-6647213-Mar2025/

Micheál Martin and Donald Trump are talking in the White House, and a reporter asked about the housing crisis. Trump responds with, “That’s a good problem to have.” And then Martin responds, “That’s a bunch of crap Mr Trump, you are clearly a moron, and not fit to run a country, fuck off you insufferable prick.”

My apologies, I think I just slipped into a parallel universe, a very different universe where Micheál Martin has a spine. What Martin actually said was, “That’s a very good answer, president.” So, we’re in a country where many people just take it for granted that their living situation will be precarious for a lot of their lives, maybe for all of their lives, but Trump announces that it’s a good problem to have. HURRAY, ALL IS WELL!!!!!

So, Ireland has a housing crisis, an increasing problem of unclean water, our wonderful native birds are being driven to extinction, and the Irish government is complicit in a horrific genocide.

And yet, for some people, the priority is that trans people exist?

Think of all the energy that was put into opposing gay rights throughout the decades. Imagine if all of that energy had been put into creating a more just society, instead of keeping gay people down. And then, after all those decades, gay people got their rights, and did anything bad happen? No!

What was it all for? All that worry, all that panic, about gay people getting the same rights as straight people, what a waste! So much time dedicated to a completely worthless cause!

Don’t fall for it again. Don’t be taken for a fool again. Twenty years ago, gay people were the scapegoat, the target that people directed their hatred against while the powers that be just sat back and laughed. Now it’s trans people. Twenty years from now it’ll probably be some other group again. Every moment spent getting upset that non-binary people use they/them pronouns is a moment that could be spent opposing the cruelty of the housing crisis. Every second spent in a rage over whatever Dylan Mulvaney did this week is a second that could be spent fighting for cleaner water. Time spent being upset about what bathroom trans people use is time that could be spent fighting climate change, and fighting against the extinction of the wonderful wildlife in this country and other countries. Time spent giving support to that MUPPET Enoch Burke, and I’ve written about him here:

is time that could be spent showing your opposition to the world’s first livestreamed genocide.

Elon Musk and J.K Rowling don’t give a fuck about you. And frankly, they are pathetic individuals. Imagine having an amount of wealth that most people can never dare to dream of having, and instead of, living a happy enjoyable life, spend every spare minute in a rage about trans people. It is, beyond moronic! They will never have to worry about homelessness, being able to afford treatment for a medical illness, or having clean water, they can’t relate to the struggles and problems of most people, so why should anything these two have to say about trans people or anything else have any relevance to my life or yours?

Hopefully, some day, hopefully soon, the transphobia of today will be put behind us, or at least greatly reduced. And when that day comes, do you want to say that you spent this time helping to fight against bigotry against trans people, and in general were a part of fighting for a better world for all of us, whether trans or cis, or will you have to admit that you got swept up in the worthless cause of a bunch of childish billionaires?

Don’t fall for transphobia. It is a worthless and infantile cause, and it is a distraction from the task of creating a more just, a more humane, and a more beautiful world for all of us.
